“William Grieve Laburn left a collection of notes about his experience as an engineer on a tramp steamer to his daughter Lois Harley. She was fascinated by his tales of life in the 1920’s, roaming the Indian Ocean, his descriptions of the various ports where the steamer docked and the problems the engineers had in keeping the engines running. He was also very interested in Diesel engines and wrote about them as well as the confusing Australian Railway systems that kept changing gauges. Lois thought his story deserved a wider audience, hence the publication of this booklet, which has been very well received by both engineers and seamen.”
